Our course has explored various dimensions of educational systems and the relationship between education and broader society. For this assignment, you will write one final paper where you examine and describe an experience in your own educational career. You will not trace your entire educational history. That is beyond the scope of this paper. Instead, you will focus on one educational moment and analyze it using the concepts gained from this course. For example, you could talk about what it was like to attend a high school with zero tolerance discipline policies. In this example, you are specifically focusing on one aspect your school experience (the school to prison pipeline climate) and one particular moment in your school career (high school). Here’s what your paper must address specifically and how it should be structured: You are to choose one moment from your educational career (for instance, you can choose an interaction with one of your teachers in high school) and you will analyze that moment through the lens of inequality (race, class, gender, and/sexuality). You can select one dimension of inequality (for instance, race) or you may choose more than one dimension of inequality (for example, did gender and race matter at the same time? How and in what ways?) Specifically, you are exploring what role race, gender, social class, and/or sexuality played in your educational moment. You are discussing both your individual experiences with inequality and how inequality matters structurally. For example, if you chose to discuss your experiences attending a high school with zero tolerance discipline policies, you might think consider the role of race/racism and the school to prison pipeline. Think of the racial composition of your school, who was wanded and passed through the metal detectors, etc.
